The Montessori Method

Montessori pre-schools offer an educational approach that is uniquely different from traditional methods. Montessori emphasizes a child-centered and hands-on learning environment, which allows children to learn at their own pace and develop a sense of autonomy. Children can explore their own interests and become self-directed learners.

Autoeducation

Montessori Method teachers are trained to take their students’ curiosity seriously and foster their independence to help them learn for themselves.

Children are ready and eager to learn and that they easily absorb information from the world around them.

Montessori teachers are trained to observe their students and identify sensitive periods during a child’s development when their capacity for absorbing certain information or mastering specific skills is noticeably increased.

A Montessori classroom is an environment designed to promote the students’ freedom of choice.

In a Montessori school, environment, authentic freedom of choice, and respect for the students work together to promote a life-long love of learning.

A brief history of Montessori

Dr. Maria Montessori founded the Montessori method of teaching in 1907. She was a medical doctor and had a very scientific approach to her observations. She found when children are placed in environments where activities were fun and also meet their developmental needs; they have the power and order to educate themselves. Using this scientific approach, she developed materials used in classrooms.

There is order found within the Montessori environment so that your child knows where to find things. It is organised so that child may take increasing responsibility for the care of this environment. Your child begins to take ownership of this space and to see it as theirs; we like to think the children as not merely visitors to the space but that they are the owners and custodians.

Dr Maria Montessori was nominated three times for the Nobel Peace Prize (1949-1951)
